Personality:
"We are bound by our choices, but we are more than our mistakes.
For us, there is no victory; there are only battles.
And in the end the best you can hope for is to find a place to make your stand.
And if you’re very lucky, you find someone to stand with you."
— Kate Beckett
Kate is the product of the circumstances of her life. Early on she had what would be called an ideal upbringing. Well enough off to be comfortable, two adoring parents who thought the world of her and even idols on TV who convinced her she could be anything. The future was wide open for Kate and ripe for the taking.
At least until the death of her mother, Kate's life took a sharp turn as did her father's. Jim began to drink heavily and Kate had to become the adult for them both. With her father descending into alcoholism, Beckett took a hard look at her life and rather than following in her mother's footsteps as a lawyer she decided she could do more as a cop. With her head and heart set on it she began to train and eventually managed to pull her father back to sobriety and get herself through the academy by will, devotion and a certain series of crime novels.
Because of her tenacity, devotion and head strong nature Kate excelled at her work and put in time well past her hours in looking into the details of her mother's case. It had never set well with her that a random crime had taken Johanna Beckett. For years she harbored a mild obsession with the case, which did not go unnoticed. Roy Montgomery saw her and the potential in her and gave Kate the chance to work up to Detective. Though he had other motives to be revealed years later, Montgomery became a father figure and mentor to Kate and helped her get past the grief and obsession over her mother's death. He guided her to channel her deep empathy and intellect into helping other families who had lost loved ones.
Once more Beckett's attentiveness and sharp mind helped her excel and she rose through the ranks to become a decorated and respected homicide detective. After having established herself and forming friends she had a routine to her life. With the support from her team and her father she had reached a point of balance in her life. This of course meant things needed to change, again.
Enter Rick Castle. The writer was immediately annoying to Kate, his lecherous attitude and inability to take anything seriously shredded any of the fascination she might otherwise have had for a favored author. Being forced to partner with him rubbed Kate the wrong way, but she endured it for the good of the department, thinking soon enough he would be out of her hair and life would be back to normal.
Castle however saw more potential there than she did and stuck around. Kate's intelligence made it hard to ignore his contributions. Eventually Castle was accepted into the circle of those she fiercely cared for and protected. Closeness was difficult to build for Kate because of the fear of being hurt again as she was with her mother's loss. So she kept him at a safe emotional distance, even as Rick continued to grow on her.
It was Castle who, against Beckett's wishes, reopened her mother's case. He sent her back down the rabbit hole that once again threatened to consume her, but he also helped her uncover the truth. Kate sank into the case again and this time it was dangerous. Pursuing the truth cost a dear friend and very nearly her own life. Kate shut down when the case stalled and she had to recover from being shot. She stopped calling or seeing people, and Rick grew distant, perhaps by design of her own distance.
It took extensive therapy, both physical and emotional, before she could begin to deal with things again. In her words she'd built a wall to protect herself and she was finally beginning to see it come down, she hoped Rick would be there when it fell.
Over time Kate was able to forgive herself, bring closure to her and her father and be able to live a life outside of the shadow of Johanna's death. Kate and Rick were able to be open with each other but with such strong and stubborn personalities there was never a chance that things would be carefree.
Kate Beckett has learned greater patience and open mindedness from her time with Castle. She has been able to accept that alternative ideas can be just as valid as her own, though some of the more farfetched paranormal ideas that strike Castle, Ryan and Esposito are met with a grim note of disapproval.
